While doing a task about who were Jesus friends or disciples with my daughter for her Sabbath school class? We came towards the end and I spoke about how Judas was replaced by Matthias…
The question came back to me…
“Why mummy? Why was Judas replaced?”
I explained in my best child friendly version. That it was due to Judas telling the people who wanted to hurt Jesus, where he was for money. I explained that he left the group and was later replaced by Matthias.
It made me have a really good think about who were Jesus’ disciples or friends as some would call them. Who were the people that he entrusted to join him on his earthly mission and continue the legacy?
That’s what was interesting they came from all over. They came from different backgrounds. Had a variety of characters, jobs, levels of education and finances. Not one of them were the same as the other. Yet they were important to Jesus and were included in his mission of salvation. He had a place for each of them that required them to develop and grow as a unit. No one was greater or more important than the other.
There it was, that eureka moment…
That realisation that Jesus’ mission didn’t stop at the disciples. He told them to go and preach his message throughout the world.
That’s what’s special about Easter. It’s not just about the remembrance of the Friday sacrifice, the Sabbath rest and peace on Saturday or the Celebration of the Sunday resurrection. It’s about the mission and legacy that Jesus left in the disciples hands, that has been passed on throughout generations.
The Great Commission to…
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 ESV
This Easter let the Great Commission be the cross we bear as we do our part in God’s plan for our salvation. Just one small conversation with a child, partner, friend, colleague or stranger can start the ball rolling and spread the good news of Easter throughout the world.
