The other day as I was waiting in the car for my husband. I realised I could continue reading my book. I had an epiphany about the need to value and appreciate the shorter periods of time. Those unexpected moments I can use to make a difference. I’m learning to utilise those random 5 mins that occur when you least expect it.
In life it seems like we have to wait for the day, week or month when we have a lot of free time to do something. Free time to start a new book, learn a new skill, try a new recipe, call a friend, spend time with the family, have some quiet time or just work on ourselves… I don’t know, the possibilities are endless.
However, it continually occurs to me that we continue to wait for a considerable amount of time to make a change for ourselves and our well-being. Sometimes (actually most times) it will never come. So, what can you do? Here’s some examples of what I’ve been trying to do.
If you’re a parent like me and have been feeling tired and exhausted with all the summer hols adventures. When my children are happy and entertained ( for about 5 mins). Rather than fill that time by starting some other chore. I’ve literally gone to another room to relax in some shape or form.
If my husband is doing the driving, I take the time to read my new book or sing/learn songs with the kids. Or even just close my eyes and sleep.
On route to an appointment, I used that time to call or text a friend or listen to a podcast. Do some mindfulness, have quiet time, talk to God etc
The other day when everyone was out of house unexpectedly, I dropped everything to restart doing my creative expression through art and drawing.
Now this doesn’t happen all the time, every day or week. I have to admit that I have been pleasantly surprised at how much more I have accomplished by using those random 5 mins. Especially in regards to just having a quiet moment. Admittedly I have not finished my book or my creative artwork piece yet. Nonetheless, I know for a fact that I am much closer to completion. If I had waited for a longer period of time. I probably wouldn’t have started anything.
I’m sure there’s some famous proverb, quote or saying that could go here (I didn’t get 5 mins to look).
So, as I was capitalising on my minutes this came to mind and is my encouragement to you.
“Every minute counts”. Naomi Falana
That doesn’t mean you are busy, being busy. It means you are busy, being calm and doing something that makes you happy. Making and strengthening connections with family, friends and other people. Valuing every minute, you have invested in what matters to you and your well-being.
Actually, there’s a Bible text in Ecclesiastes 3:1 that states “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.”(NLT Version)
So allow yourselves time to utilise those random minutes.
