My husband and I got diagnosed with two separate conditions a few years ago that were unavoidable. Meaning it wasn’t linked to anything we did or didn’t do. It just happened and there’s no real reason behind it. Both are managed with medication and we’ll have to live with them for the rest of our lives.
We both went through the same motions of utter disbelief and fear of the unknown. Questions flooded our mind like, why me? Why now? Why us? We searched and researched for answers and a cure.
We were both given similar advice and told to have the treatment or else it’ll get worse.
What does this all mean to you?
Why should you care?
Think about those times when you’re doing life and it throws you a curve ball. The type of ball that literally knocks the wind out of you. You start to feel like your new role is to be the Greek god, Atlas and you have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders.
My husband and I both accepted our fate. We realised that neither of us had the strength to manage our illnesses alone. We needed to support each other. We needed to remind each other to rely on God to provide what we needed.
As I am writing the song ‘I can bear it’ by Walter Hawkins came to mind. It's a song the Holloway SDA Gospel Choir sang, the choir I was in many years ago. It reminds us that God wouldn’t put more on us than we can bear. Then a few days later God lead me to the Bible text in Matthew 11:28-30.
”Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”“
Matthew 11:28-30 NLT
It’s a beautiful reminder that we’re not doing life alone. Jesus wants to be a part of each of our journeys. God never intended for us to do life alone. Family and community have always been at the core of His plan. Remember that life is precious and every waking moment is a special blessing. Let us seek God first with showing us how to care for each other and ourselves.
In 2024, let us support each other with being grateful for each day that we have been given. There will be unplanned challenges to overcome but God has given us one more day to be thankful for.
