What’s in a Name?

So, Mariposa Blessings has been out of action for a few months for numerous reasons. They were all mostly linked to the journey I was on to produce and introduce new life to this world. During this time, it wasn’t easy, even though it wasn’t the first time. It was full of unexpected twists and turns. There were a few highs but quite a lot of low points. These moments had a real impact on my pregnancy journey and the outcome. Nevertheless, praise be to God that my pregnancy journey ended with me having a handsome new addition to our family.

As part of introducing this new addition to our community and the world we had to choose a name or names for our son. My husband and I went through many choices and varieties but finally settled on three names. These names were not just chosen because we liked how they sounded. They were chosen because they carried meaning, significant meaning relating to my pregnancy journey and what we would like for our son’s future.

It made me really think about names and their significance. Some people may think there’s nothing important about a name. That it’s just something we use to identify someone.

However, what’s really in a name? What impact does it have? Does it change how we are seen by others? What do people say when they hear our name?

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches.” Proverbs 22:1

Then I remembered something that happened to me about a month before I gave birth to my son…

It made me wonder if our names and reputation are interwoven/intertwined beyond what we realise.

Let me explain… I have basically been doing supply work for about a year and a half. In that time curious things or coincidences have been occurring especially within the last few months.

I did a long-term role at a school and based on my surname I encountered someone that knew my husband and some of my friends. They talked highly of him and I could see they had an expectation of what I would be like based on that.

Then over the last few months I have been doing supply work many of the schools I have been to have either had at least one person that I have worked with before. Or someone I know from church or socially. I never knew they worked there and only realised when I got there.

The one thing that made these encounters pleasant and surprising was that they all were happy to see me. They were welcoming and inviting. My most recent encounter left me thinking that wherever I go, whatever I do or say has more of a lasting impression that I truly valued.

The woman said she saw my name on the papers and was surprised but happy. She then went on to be very complementary about my skills and abilities to the other staff before I had even started. The faith she had in me and that I could see she was instilling within her fellow colleagues, could not have been achieved on my own in such a short space of time.

It made me realise that I’m grateful to God for helping me to always do my best in all the jobs I’ve been in and staying true to who I have been called to be. Even when it’s been very hard and stressful by standing up for what was right. I have been able to see people from my past jobs and hold my head up. My head has been held up even higher by the ones I’ve met on my supply work journey.

So, when you think 🤔 oh my name has no impact. You may be surprised at what you are leaving behind. You might not see it today, but our duty is to stay true to God’s plan for us and strive to do our best. Understand that God knows your name and can use it to do more than we could imagine. Knowing that something as small as a name can provide a long-lasting legacy and comfort.

“Integrity: A name is a blueprint of the thing we call character. You ask, What’s in a name? I answer, Just about everything you do.” Morris Mandel
